I am no pacifist, though I certainly understand and respect that philosophy. I thank God for our service men and women who fear nothing and sacrifice everything for the sake of preserving life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. However, I find nothing about which to rejoice in death of a sworn enemy, no matter how vile. Vengeance is best left to God.
It is enough that we should only seek justice, and seek it relentlessly. But let us seek it without forgetting the horrible price it will always extract in the having. How many thousands of good young men and women have given their lives to make this moment possible? A noble warrior never celebrates blood spilled, but remembers the fellow warriors lost in the effort, and rejoices only when peace finally comes.
I believe in justice, and I believe that we have seen justice meted out in yesterday in full measure. Let us leave the grave-dancing to those who have no love for life.
